Overview: MIRA is a Multi-Sensory Stimulation Device designed to enhance patient care in the Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit (NSICU). The device leverages immersive audio and visual experiences to alleviate stress and improve patient outcomes. Developed using Electron, React, and AWS amplify, MIRA aims to reduce the psychological burden on ICU patients by providing a calming environment.

The ICU environment can be highly stressful for patients, often leading to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health issues. Research indicates that approximately 20% of adult ICU survivors develop PTSD symptoms, with factors such as noise, sleep disturbance, and sedation contributing to trauma. Moreover, the ICU experience is compounded by the lack of clear communication and prolonged sedative drug use, which can delay the recovery of consciousness and increase psychological distress. MIRA was conceptualized to address these issues by creating a multi-sensory environment that could help mitigate the negative effects of the ICU stay. The goal was to reduce noise-induced stress, provide visual and auditory stimuli to aid relaxation, and improve overall patient comfort and well-being.



I created the Frontend using React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS. The Form generation with React Hook Forms. The app included a custom video CMS that reads videos from the file system and programatically creates the UI. The system features a dual-window setup powered by Electron, allowing for separate visual on the projector and an interactive touchscreen display. The backend, hosted on AWS, utilized GraphQL via AWS AppSync for data management. The hardware setup included a Mac Mini with a touchscreen and a projector, providing an intuitive and engaging experience for patients. The system was designed for ease of use, requiring minimal training for healthcare staff.
