Concept

Flourish is a research-based project designed to investigate the effects of various motion types on cognitive function. It features a large-scale, interactive projection environment that serves as a sensory sanctuary in the stressful surroundings of ICU floors. Based on Attention Restoration Theory, the project integrates extensive research that highlights the benefits of physical activity on mental skills such as attention, concentration, creativity, and work performance. Targeted primarily at ICU nurses, who often face high levels of stress, burnout, and cognitive fatigue, Flourish provides a day-long intervention to help alleviate these symptoms and promote relief from both mental and physical exhaustion. The project seeks to boost the well-being and cognitive efficiency of the nursing staff through engaging and immersive experiences.

Flourish is comprised of five distinct interactive experiences, each tailored to enhance specific cognitive functions and foster desired mental states. These experiences use motion tracking technology to create an interactive, personalized environment for the participants.

Process

For Flourish I led the transition of our Recharge Room microservice architecture from a Linux-based system to a containerized environment using Docker, enhancing deployment efficiency and scalability. I meticulously reconfigured Python and Node.js modules for compatibility within containers, and employed Docker Compose to streamline service orchestration and manage file dependencies effectively. This allowed us to use the same monitoring tools in a new hardware environment.

I developed 'Color Chorus,' a dynamic fluid simulation experience, utilizing GLSL within TouchDesigner to simulate fluid dynamics principles such as pixel velocity and vorticity. This immersive art installation creates a calming, interactive visual landscape that responds to body movements, captivating users with its colorful, swirling patterns.
